The first matchday of this year’s Women’s Championship was completed last week, and the 6 teams that competed gave their first indications, without this predetermining anything for the new season.
The highest score of the matchday was achieved by the All’D Stars, who prevailed over the Dikefalos Geriou Angels with a resounding 71-18, starting the new season on the right foot. The Larnaca team fully utilized both the home-court advantage and the deep roster they possess (11/12 players scored) and achieved the ideal start.
Perhaps the most important victory of the matchday was achieved by last year’s Champions, the Blue Cats, who secured an away win in Limassol on Friday night, defeating the newcomer Aris with 36-58. The Ayios Demetios team, led by E. Ignatiou and Papagianni (16 and 13 points respectively), took an early lead, which they managed to maintain until the end, despite the pressure from the Limassol team, who left a positive impression against a very difficult opponent.
The most even contest of the premiere took place in Makedonitissa, with the ETHA “Queens” taking the victory against the WNBA team with 34-31 and starting the competition with a win. The match was decided in its very final stages, with the home team proving to be calmer at the end and securing their first win.
Among the pleasant sights we saw in the games of the 1st matchday was the significant public attendance in the stands (more than the men’s games), which confirms once again the public’s great interest in women’s amateur basketball this year.
The sporting focus now shifts to the games of the 2nd matchday, which begin tomorrow with the Black Panthers (who had a bye in the premiere) hosting Aris. The action continues on Thursday with two more balanced matchups: WNBA vs All’D Stars and Blue Cats vs ETHA Court Queens. The Dikefalos Geriou Angels will have a bye this week.
