The Nicosia Municipality team may have been a little late in securing its first “pink sheet” (win) this year, but last night they succeeded, winning away against the Old Timers with a score of 41-53.
The “Nicosians” did not start the current season under the best auspices, as they suffered an equal number of defeats in the first three matchdays (against Macedones, Think Colour, and Old Bulldogs), an uncharacteristically poor start for the team’s standards.
Nevertheless, they aspire that, starting with yesterday’s away win, they will be able to have a clearly better continuation and climb to higher levels in the standings of the “Morphou” Region.
It is obvious that the Nicosia Municipality team has been somewhat weakened compared to previous years when they had a more prominent presence in the Winter Championship. The loss of certain key players from last year’s roster (e.g., Kypros Demetriou, Skevos Antoniou, Kyriakos Pelekanos, Petros Fotiou, etc.) does not seem to have been replenished to the desired level.
However, the team still retains some very valuable players this year with great experience in amateur basketball (e.g., Menoikou, Karaolis, Liolis, Leivadas, Kim, etc.), who can significantly help the team achieve its goals.
Based on the current data and after the first four matchdays, the Nicosia Municipality team will obviously aim to enter the Silver Category, a goal which is feasible but not guaranteed, as difficult matches follow in the coming matchdays.
Until the end of the Championship’s First Phase, Nicosia Municipality has 4 games to play against strong teams that are above them in the standings (e.g., P&P, EAK, UNIC, and Famagusta) and one more against the Splash Ballers. The positive thing for them is that 4 out of the 5 games will be played in their “cage” in Engomi, but they will have to significantly step up their game if they want to avoid trouble and not end up in the Bronze Category.
