For the first time in the history of Cypriot amateur basketball, the Winter Championship will participate in the 17th FIMBA Basketball World Championship. This year’s tournament is being held in the Ticino region of Switzerland from June 27 to July 6, 2025. More than 400 teams and over 6,000 athletes from around the world are expected to take part.
Our team, representing Cyprus, will compete in the Over 40s category, a highly competitive field with 21 teams from various countries. The teams have been divided into seven groups, and the Winter Championship has been placed in Group A, where they will face teams from Mexico and England.
The Winter Championship’s game schedule is as follows:
- Saturday, June 28: First match against Mexico
- Sunday, June 29: Second match against a team from England
The schedule for subsequent games will be determined based on the results of the group stage. Our team is expected to participate in at least four games. The delegation will be led by well-known Cypriot coach Costas Englezos, and Cyprusbasket will serve as the communication sponsor.
This participation is a very significant step for the Winter Championship, as it opens up new horizons beyond national borders and integrates its presence into the international community of veteran basketball players.
