Suspense-filled top-of-the-table win for ETHA against Aris

ETHA Court Queens celebrated their fourth win in six games last night, as after a match strictly not recommended for the faint-hearted, they snatched victory from Aris Limassol, prevailing 36–34 in the 7th round of the Women’s Championship.

With this win, the Egkomi-based team climbed to the top of the standings, although they have played one more game than Blue Cats and All’D Stars, who face each other tonight in their head-to-head derby.

The game at the Makedonitissa Gymnasium was gripping, developing into a true nail-biting thriller that was decided in the final seconds. Michalis Zakos’ team held the lead for most of the contest, but it was never comfortable, as Aris remained constantly within striking distance.

Zoi Agapiou’s team even managed to take the lead one minute before the end, going ahead 33–34. However, a dagger three-pointer by Nadia Athanasiou put the hosts back in front at 36–34, a lead they managed to defend tooth and nail until the final buzzer, despite repeated attempts by the visitors to respond.

A standout performance for the hosts came from Ingrid Akathiotou, who recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds, with Nadia Athanasiou providing key support with 9 points. For the Limassol side, who came very close to securing a big road win, Zoi Agapiou and Tereza Antoniou stood out with 10 and 7 points respectively.
