One of the particularly pleasant surprises of this year’s Championship is undoubtedly the KEP-Dikefalos Geri team, which has recorded a very positive start to the season, already counting three victories and only one defeat, resulting in them being (even temporarily) in second place in the standings.
This specific start for the Geri team is the best they have recorded in the 5 seasons they have participated in the Winter Basketball Championship and undoubtedly fills the entire team with optimism, in view of the difficult continuation.
Notable in the course of Andreas Themistokleous’ team so far is that two of the three victories came away from Geri, as well as the fact that in the last two successes, their victory came with margins approaching +30 (77-49 against Blue Cats, 66-40 against Basket Bros).
It is obvious that the additions of Serdaris, Theocharidis, and Georgiou have given a new flair to the KEP team, which this year has great plurality on the perimeter, as well as firepower under the baskets. It should also be noted that the team has not yet fully utilized the services of the injured Tony Constantinides (returning soon), as well as other very good players who have played very little so far due to other obligations.
A realistic assessment of KEP’s potential further course suggests that, barring a major upset, they have secured a spot in the Silver Category, which was logically the team’s initial goal and which they will try to win.
Perhaps, if the draw had been somewhat different and they didn’t have the giants PN99, Warriors, and ESOBGA as opponents in the same Region, they might have even set their sights on the Gold Category, a goal that seems very difficult, but not entirely unachievable (given that they will host the top two teams in Geri).
A difficult triple-header of games follows, with PN99 at home, Wizards away, and Warriors at home. KEP’s performances so far have raised the bar of expectations quite high for their fans (rumours say they will make a strong presence at the next game). However, the results of the next 3 matchdays will reveal how high this year’s ceiling is for the Geri team.
