The Blue Cats are once again the champions of the Women’s Winter Championship. After an outstanding performance last night, they defeated the Youth Stars 37-50 in the Grand Final, achieving the coveted back-to-back title and holding their place at the top of the league for a second consecutive season.
Despite two losses to last night’s opponent during the Regular Season, the Agios Dometios team won the third and most decisive meeting between the two, rightfully claiming the title.
The Grand Final was a true celebration of women’s amateur basketball. In addition to the great spectacle filled with suspense, passion, and excitement provided by the two finalists, there was a remarkably large crowd that made the atmosphere even more beautiful and thrilling. Both contenders gave their all on the court and passionately fought for the win until the final minutes of the match. In the end, as is often the case in basketball, the smiles belonged to the team that played better for most of the game.
At the start, Athina Papagianni’s team caught the Youth Stars by surprise, leading 7-14. However, Adonis Christou’s team quickly bounced back, going on an 11-0 run to lead 18-14 by the end of the first quarter. The momentum shifted in the second period, with the “Cats” recovering and holding the Youth Stars to an offensive drought for about 7 minutes. The score went from 21-16 to 23-26, which was the halftime score.
In the second half, the Agios Dometios team continued at the same pace. Their zone defense proved highly effective, largely limiting the Youth Stars’ strengths, who likely had their worst offensive performance of the season in the last three quarters. The third quarter ended with the score at 30-37, and it was clear the Blue Cats had the upper hand.
A quick 6-0 run by the Youth Stars at the start of the 4th quarter brought the difference down to just one point (36-37), adding new excitement to a game that was clearly not over yet. However, the home team’s counterattack didn’t last long. From that moment on (the 32nd minute) until the end of the game, the Youth Stars scored just 1 point, in contrast to the speedy “Cats,” who used their quickness and explosiveness to score 14 points, sealing the fate of their opponents.
The final score of 37-50 was a reward for the Blue Cats’ excellent performance in the Grand Final, and they deservedly won the championship title. The MVP of the Grand Final was Elena Ignatiou, who scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Her main partner was her sister Maria (16 points, 12 rebounds). For the Youth Stars, Sofia Cheimonetou stood out with 13 points, followed by Liza Evripidou with 11.
Our warmest congratulations to the Blue Cats for their well-deserved title and to the Youth Stars for their excellent performance throughout the entire season. We wish both teams a good holiday and some rest, and we hope they will be back with us next season to give us new and beautiful basketball moments.
